About Plan With Phil

Meet Phillip Chin

Founder & Independent Insurance Broker

With over 18 years in the insurance industry, I started Plan with Phil to help individuals and families navigate the complexities of life and disability insurance. As an independent broker, I work with a wide range of top-rated carriers to find each client the best possible coverage — tailored to your needs and your budget, never to a sales quota.

I’m based in New York but serve clients in most states, and I take pride in giving every person personalized, one-on-one attention. Helping people achieve real financial security is what drives me.

Outside of insurance, I’m a devoted family man — you’ll usually find me on the pickleball court, staying active, or spending time with my community.

When you work with me, your needs always come first. My goal is simple: to make sure you have the coverage you need to protect what matters most.

Why did you get into life insurance?

I didn't come from a family that saw life insurance as a must-have, so early on I had to believe in it before anyone around me did. Plenty of people treat this as just a job — and I get it, because most don't last in this field. I came up with no safety net and nobody handing me clients, so I had to go all in. Nearly 20 years later I'm still here, and that's something I'm proud of. For me this stopped being a job a long time ago — it's a career I chose on purpose.

What makes you different from another agent?

Authenticity — and people feel it fast. I don't run a sales pitch or hide behind fluff; you get honest, direct answers, even when it's not what you were hoping to hear. My longtime clients, especially the older ones, tell me they can hear it in my voice. That's not something you can fake or teach. It's just how I've always done this.

What's the hardest part of the job?

Honestly, it's timing. People often call me right after a scare, a new baby, or a diagnosis — when coverage is harder and pricier to get. I wish more folks reached out a year sooner. The other tough part is undoing bad advice: someone was told they'd never qualify, or they're paying too much for the wrong policy. Fixing that takes patience, but it's the most satisfying part of my week.

Can you find me the best price?

Here's the honest truth: I don't control the price. Your rate comes down to your age and health, and no agent can change that. What I can control is where I take your file. After underwriting thousands of families, I usually know which company will view your situation most kindly — and that's where the real savings come from. Same you, the right carrier, the best price you qualify for.

What's the biggest misconception about life insurance?

That it's expensive and complicated. Most healthy people are surprised how affordable term coverage really is — often less than a streaming bundle for a healthy 35-year-old. And you don't need to understand every detail. That's my job. Your job is just to tell me who you want to protect.

Why work with 25+ carriers instead of one company?

Because the same person can hear a flat no from one company and land a great rate at another. If I worked for a single carrier, I'd have to make you fit their box. As an independent broker, I shop 25+ companies and take your file to the ones that treat your situation kindly — same coverage, better price. And I never charge a broker fee.

What's the most rewarding moment you've had with a client?

The reward is the phone call five or ten years later. A client rings to update an old policy and they're surprised — and happy — that it's still me picking up. Nobody enjoys dialing an 800 number and explaining their life to a stranger; people want a person, they want their guy. I've always been that guy, and I plan to stay that guy. The best proof is that most of my referrals come from long-time clients — they know me, they trust my work, and they send me the people they care about. You can't buy that.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Still doing right by families — just reaching more of them. Over the next five years I want to lean into smart technology and automation so it's even easier for people to find me and find better coverage. AI is going to touch every industry, and used the right way, I think it can take the confusion out of insurance: faster answers, clearer options, less runaround. The goal never changes though — make good coverage simple to find, and stay the person you can actually talk to.

What do you wish every family knew before they buy?

Two things. First, buy for the years your family actually depends on your income — not a random number. Second, your age and health only go up in price, so the best day to lock in a rate is usually today. Beyond that, don't overthink it: a simple plan you actually put in place beats a perfect plan you keep putting off.
